Bringing Different Cultural Celebrations Under One Roof

At GESS, we want our students to reap the full benefits of growing up in a culturally diverse and vibrant community. This October proved to be the perfect reflection of that spirit, with a galore of cultural activities that inspired curiosity, reflection, and joy across the school.

We kicked off the month with the celebration of the Day of German Unity, a momentous occasion of historical significance and a meaningful opportunity for students to reflect on our shared values of openness, respect, and diversity. It was a truly school-wide celebration, from a student-organised secondary school assembly graced by Dr Fanghänel, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, to a series of engaging workshops by renowned scientist Prof. Masala, attended by GESS students and visiting guests from local Singaporean schools.

The month ended on another high note with our Deepavali celebrations, which filled the campus with vibrance. Our annual Bhangra dance performance got the school community marvelling and dancing together. Around the school, students immersed themselves in Deepavali-themed activities, from rangoli making and henna art to trying on traditional outfits, capturing moments at the photo booth, and playing cultural games at festive stalls. Each activity offered a glimpse into the rich traditions and symbolism behind this festival of lights.

Covering celebrations from two distinct cultural regions in a single month reflects the true advantage of being part of the richly international GESS community. Through these experiences, our students gain a deeper appreciation of cultures.
