Ensuring Students’ Personal Development Through Service Learning
At GESS, every student gets to be immersed in Service Learning, as a natural extension of what they learn in their academic subjects. While this has been part of our school culture for years, this school year takes the programme up another notch.
While these activities should benefit the environment or the community, we endeavour to bring about these benefits for our students:
📍becoming more self-aware in their strengths and areas for growth
📍being confident in undertaking challenges that help them develop new, lifelong skillsets such as good communication, leadership, teamwork, resilience and problem-solving.
📍feeling empowered to initiate, plan and lead activities, seeing through initiatives from end to end, and learning to take responsibility for decisions and time management
📍learning to work collaboratively with others
📍developing international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding, helping them grow into global citizens and ready for where their future takes them
Service Learning projects that our students have been involved in also include partnering local community entities – such as interacting with and performing for elders, delivering meals and provisions to special groups, and organising donation drives – and right here at GESS, preparing gestures of appreciation for our support staff.
